The Dominican Summer League is a branch of affiliated Minor League Baseball which is played in the Dominican Republic. The league was founded in 1985. After the demise of the Venezuelan Summer League after the 2015 season, it is the only Latin American based rookie league.

The 2017 72-game season starts June 3 and ends August 26 with the playoffs starting on August 28.

The league will be played with forty teams in five divisions. Each division will have eight teams. With the exception of the cooperative team formed by the Brewers and Indians, each team is affiliated with a different major league franchise with nine organizations fielding two teams: the Astros, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Mets, Phillies, Rangers, Rays and Reds.

The five division winners plus the best runner-up advance to the playoffs. The two division champions with the best winning percentages receive byes to the semifinals.
